A Calling

Why have you been put on this earth? It’s a big question that is so very important. It gives us meaning to pick ourselves up in the morning from bed. In other words, know your ‘Why?’ As Simon Sinek put it in his book, it’s vital in order to give our life any movement. I make sure to touch this question in every sermon. Whether you’re an elder or in your 20’s, God has a purpose for you.

So let us ask the question: “What purpose does God have for me?” The answer is so simple. Your purpose on this earth is repeated in the bible over, and over, and over again. Haven’t you noticed it yet? First and foremost, God wants us to follow His commandments. Jesus explained the two most important commandments to the Pharisees of His day. (1) Love your God with all your heart, mind, and strength, as well as (2) love your neighbor as yourself. Simple, isn’t it?

But I know what you’re saying. You desire God to give you a specific mission. One that you could call your own. And perhaps God has one for you. Let me explain my story in the hopes that you can relate.

I have made it public to everyone that I have complex PTSD. I went through about three years of torture. Towards the end of those three years, I believed what my high school bullies taught me: I was worthless. It was a hard lesson to learn, and I must admit I sometimes fight with it to this very day. But in my moment of suffering, I sent God a heart-felt prayer. One that was sincere to my soul. I prayed the following prayer.

God, I know I’m worthless. I know I’m nothing. And may I follow you through all my days. I don’t say this prayer for more happiness. I don’t say this prayer for myself. But please, if there is any way, use my suffering for good. Don’t let my suffering go in vain. Amen.

Today, I truly think God has answered that prayer. He has eased my pain as a bonus through providing doctors and counselors. I now use a concept called “mindfulness” everyday to become more aware of the present. Caleb McCool is no long a shell-of-a-person as I was during that time. No longer a shadow. Rather, Caleb McCool is here. Caleb McCool is alive.

So let’s focus our attention on you. Perhaps you’re looking for a purpose in life. Will God ever jump out of the clouds to tell you your purpose? Probably not. At least, not for me. God works in mysterious ways. We are to accept that. Trust that God will fulfill His plan for you. Simply say the prayer, “God, please use me.” After that, follow His commandments. And in heaven, God will show you how miraculous He truly is at orchestrating your life for others.
